Universiti Malaya issues apology after controversial remarks made by US professor

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Malaya (UM) has issued a public apology regarding the controversial statements by a political science professor from the US.

In a statement posted on their social media page, the university expressed regret and announced that it has taken immediate action to cancel any programs and activities scheduled to be attended by the invited foreign speaker.

“To ensure such incidents do not recur, Universiti Malaya is enhancing procedures and guidelines, particularly in background checks on individuals or parties involved, including assessing social media profiles for risk evaluation,” the statement said.

It added that it would tighten its background checks on individuals or parties involved in UM programmes, including assessing their social media profiles for potential risks.

Universiti Malaya also condemned the recent statements made by the individual regarding security aspects of traveling to Malaysia.

The university also added that they will continue to support the government’s stance against any elements related to Israel and fully endorse efforts to recognise Palestine as a legitimate independent state.

Bruce Gilley, a political science professor at Portland State University, purportedly claimed in his talk on Tuesday that Malaysia was pushing for a “second Holocaust against the Jewish people”.

He tweeted at 9am today that he has “safely departed from Malaysia”.
