Review - The Divergent Series: Allegiant

18 Mar 2016 / 18:45 H.

THIS is the third film in the futuristic dystopian Divergent series, based on the books by Veronica Roth.
Allegiant takes place in Chicago after Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) and her friends overthrow the repressive regime in the second movie, Insurgent.
However, things aren’t better with new leader Evelyn (Naomi Watts), who soon loses the support of pacifist leader Johanna (Octavia Spencer).
Determined to find out what lies beyond the walls that surround the city they long called home, Tris and her friends escape and somehow make it to a toxic wasteland known as the Fringe.
They are rescued by soldiers attached to the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, a city of sorts that is hidden behind an energy field.
Tris is taken to meet their leader, David (Jeff Daniels), who tells her that she is genetically “pure” unlike her friends, and she is the key to a better future.
Four (Theo James) and Christina (Zoe Kravitz) are retained as soldiers, while Peter (Miles Teller) and Tris’ brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort) are now doing surveillance work in which they can see things beginning to unravel in their old home.
Soon, it becomes apparent that David has his own agenda.
The cast do a commendable job, but the movie is drawn out too long, and is predictable.
Sadly, there is a part two to this film in the future.
With interest in this franchise waning, the producers should have stuck to one film and let it end with a bang.
